Project Overview

The River City Renaissance Project is designed to enhance Mason City’s Downtown area with the addition of a Multi-Purpose Arena, Performing Arts Pavilion, and The Music Man Square Complex & Hotel, including a new Museum and Skywalk. The addition of these amenities in North Iowa will help attract and retain a growing workforce.

Two ballot items will appear in the regular city election on November 7, 2017.

One will call for the approval of a lease agreement with Southbridge Mall for the multi-purpose arena project. The Multi-Purpose Arena would be owned by Southbridge Mall, leased by the City of Mason City, and sub-leased by Mason City Youth Hockey.

A second item on the ballot will call for the approval of the issuance of Urban Renewal Bonds in an amount not to exceed $14,000,000 to finance the City’s part of the Music Man Square Complex and hotel, skywalk, and Performing Arts Pavilion.

The City of Mason City applied for funds from the Iowa Reinvestment Act in 2015 and received contingent approval for $7.1 million for the project and applied for an additional $2.9 million in the full application.

In order for the River City Renaissance Project to receive up to $10 million in state funding, the ballot items on November 7 will need to receive 60% YES vote.
